Story time!!!
Once upon a time, I was passing through my street with my little brother, and we were on a bike. When we reached the edge of the street, I found a smartphone lying there. I picked it up and gave it to my brother because I was driving. I told him, "Don’t dismiss any notifications — maybe we can find out whose phone it is."
So I gave it to him, and we continued towards our destination. After a little while, we got a call on that same phone. On the other side, there was a female voice. She asked who I was, where I picked the phone from, and begged me to return it.
I told her, “Yes, I’ll return it. I’m out of the area right now, but I’ll give it back when I come back.” And honestly, I didn’t even think once about keeping it. I didn’t even have my own phone at the time — I was using my mom’s because mine was broken. But still, I never thought of keeping that phone for myself.
After I hung up, I went for my destination and was buying smtg then I got another call — this time from her husband.
By the time I got that call, I had already kinda figured out who the owner was by checking notifications and the display picture from first call. But just to confirm, I asked him his name "Are you X", and he said yes, I told him, my name and details and we’re relative. and don’t worry, I’ve got your phone. etc.
But guess what he said? Instead of thanking me or just saying OK, he goes, “From where did you steal the phone? From our home or somewhere else?”
Like bro, what the heck? If I had stolen your phone, why would I give you, my name? Even though he was my relative, he still asked me that. It honestly hurt.
Anyway, I came back later and gave the phone to his child, who gave it to them.
But yeah bro, that hit me. I realized that no matter how loyal or honest you are, people won’t always see the good in you. Just do good for your own peace. Don’t expect anything in return.
