this arc hit me harder than most anime i've ever seen before. i almost felt physically ill thinking about what they went through. Rock's reactions—both to Gretel's backstory and what she considered a "gift"—was completely justified. i would probably also be screaming in rage at the world itself for the evil it can harbor. their backstory is completely based in history too. Hansel and Gretel are victims of the Romanian orphan phenomenon, and with the number of orphans created by it, it's highly likely that many did end up being exploited in similar ways. it all makes me so sick. i feel a little good that Gretel died the way she did, she made friends with Rock, and got to see a beautiful sky as she died. but the way the scene was written made me feel like that bullet went through my head instead. it didn't feel fair, but in the end it was all they could really do.
